The Camino13 Foundation is a global network of Camino de Santiago pilgrims, whose mission is to share the transformative power of the Camino with the world. The foundation promotes 13 core values that empower people to become agents of their personal growth and transformation, regardless of their political or religious beliefs.
The Camino13 Foundation promotes thirteen essential values for leading a full and healthy life—values especially necessary in these times of global crisis.
1. Humility:
On the Camino de Santiago, humility enables us to appreciate the grandeur of the journey and the insignificance of our personal worries. It’s a mindset of modesty that arises when we face the challenges of the Camino, accepting our limitations without trying to have all the answers or control.
Humility is seen in the willingness to learn from others, the openness to receive help, and the gratitude for every act of kindness. It teaches us to walk simply, knowing that true growth comes from embracing our vulnerability and being at peace with who we are not.
On the Camino, we learn to appreciate the value of life’s simple things and to accept ourselves as we are. Humility is a profound virtue that helps us recognize our limitations and act from a place of self-awareness.
Without a doubt, the great masters who have walked this earth have left a profound legacy, where humility became a bridge that connects souls.
“Humility is the only true wisdom that prepares us for all the possible changes life may bring.”
2. Faith:
Faith on the Camino de Santiago means trusting the process—both physically and spiritually—and believing in something greater than oneself.
For some, that faith is rooted in the divine, in religion, or in a deep connection to God. For others, it might be faith in life itself, in the purpose of the Camino, in the goodness of others, or in one’s ability to overcome personal challenges.
On the Camino, faith becomes an inner compass that offers strength and hope, helping pilgrims move forward even through difficult moments, knowing that each step has meaning and a destination. It’s the certainty that we will reach the end of the road, in Santiago, where answers to life’s big questions may be found.
We believe in the creative power within every human being and in the phrase:
“If you believe it, you can create it.”
3. Resilience:
Resilience is the capacity to adapt and bounce back in the face of adversity and challenges during the pilgrimage. It’s the emotional and mental strength that helps pilgrims push through exhaustion, physical discomfort, and moments of doubt, transforming hardships into growth.
On the Camino, resilience manifests in our ability to draw upon inner resources to persevere, to accept setbacks as part of the journey, and to maintain a positive and hopeful attitude even in the toughest moments.
This value reminds us that real power lies in the ability to rise again, stronger and wiser each time. It’s not just about taking that first step; it’s about staying consistent, being persistent, and knowing that beyond the trials of the Camino, we will reach what we long for—understanding that the joy is more in the journey than the destination.
“Life doesn’t get easier or more forgiving—we become stronger and more resilient.”
4. Tolerance:
Tolerance is the ability to accept and respect differences between people, whether in origin, beliefs, customs, or how they experience the Camino.
This value is revealed in patience and understanding, recognizing that each pilgrim walks at their own pace and faces their challenges.
On the Camino, tolerance invites us to live together in harmony, to recognize diversity as a source of richness, and to remain flexible in the face of difficulties that arise along the way. It’s an act of openness and respect that allows everyone to walk together, learning from one another without judgment or imposition.
We encourage the acceptance of every person regardless of their creed, gender, or circumstances. We believe everyone is valuable and has something beautiful to contribute.
“We are a single drop in the vast ocean—but the ocean would be less without that drop.”
5. Respect:
On the Camino de Santiago, respect is shown through consideration for fellow pilgrims, the environment, and oneself. It’s the ability to recognize the value and dignity of every person—regardless of beliefs, culture, or experience—and to act with courtesy and empathy at all times.
Respect reveals itself in peaceful coexistence, in the protection of the Camino’s natural and cultural heritage, and in honoring personal and collective boundaries.
It fosters a peaceful and compassionate atmosphere, where everyone is free to experience the Camino in their way, always aligned with collective well-being and care for our surroundings.
Respect means seeing the other as sacred and whole. We emphasize honoring personal boundaries and nurturing respect for plants, animals, and all of creation.
“Respect is the foundation of all authentic and meaningful relationships.”
6. Diversity:
We believe in growing through difference. By accepting both our light and our shadows, we begin to see the best in one another. Nothing in this world is truly identical, no matter how similar it seems. Every person, place, and thing carries its own beauty.
On the Camino, we witness the richness that comes from the variety of people, cultures, languages, and stories that converge on this shared path. Each pilgrim offers a unique perspective that enriches the journey for everyone.
Diversity on the Camino thrives in the harmony of people from across the globe—each with their own beliefs, backgrounds, and motivations—yet walking toward a shared goal.
The Camino teaches us to learn from others, to respect different ways of seeing and living life, and to discover unity in diversity. It fosters a global community, one that grows stronger by embracing every unique voice along the way.
“Diversity isn’t something to tolerate—it’s something to celebrate.”
7. Solidarity:
For pilgrims, solidarity is the commitment to support one another, creating a network of help and companionship that turns the journey into a shared experience.
It’s the willingness to lend a helping hand in times of difficulty, to share resources, and to be present for others without expecting anything in return.
On the Camino, solidarity is expressed through both small and grand gestures: offering water or food, or walking beside someone through a tough stretch. It’s a value that builds a strong, connected community where each step is taken with the awareness that no one walks alone.
We believe that together, we go further. Solidarity is a profound virtue—it brings us together to share our hopes, needs, and concerns.
“There’s no better exercise for the heart than reaching down and lifting someone up.”
8. Friendship:
What an honor it is to call someone “Friend.” On the Camino to Santiago, friendships develop into profound bonds forged through shared experiences among pilgrims.
This connection arises naturally—regardless of age, culture, or language—and it’s strengthened by empathy, mutual support, and moments lived together along the way.
Friendship on the Camino is sincere and selfless. It grows from trust, honest conversations, support during difficult stretches, and the celebration of shared milestones. It often extends beyond the pilgrimage, leaving lasting marks in the hearts of those who experience it.
On the Camino, you open yourself to meeting people from all over the world. And always, we are united by the phrase Buen Camino, which weaves a thread of beautiful friendship.
Friendship is one of life’s greatest gifts—it reminds us that we’re never truly alone as long as we have companions to walk life’s path with.
“Friendship is a soul dwelling in two bodies, a heart living in two souls.”
9. Service: On the Camino de Santiago, service is the act of giving selflessly. It’s offered by those who host and care for pilgrims—and also by the pilgrims themselves, who support one another along the way.
Service is about showing up for others, offering what you have—your time, resources, or even a word of encouragement.
On the Camino, service goes beyond material help. It’s a gesture of generosity and solidarity that nurtures both the giver and the receiver, creating a spirit of mutual care and community.
This beautiful value invites us to live the words of Mother Teresa:
“The one who doesn’t live to serve, doesn’t serve to live.”
10. Love:
On the Camino de Santiago, we experience love as the universal force that unites all pilgrims, fostering a genuine connection with oneself, others, and the world around us. It transcends personal affection, revealing itself through empathy, respect, solidarity, appreciation for nature, and gratitude for each moment of the journey.
Love is felt in simple acts of kindness, in the warmth of shared smiles, and in the joy of being part of something greater. This love transforms the Camino into a space for deep encounters, where the heart opens to life in its purest, most authentic form.
We believe that through self-love, we can begin to heal what we see as one of the greatest afflictions of humanity: lovelessness.
Every act of love brings us closer to the inner peace we so desperately need in these times—love for creation, for others, and our existence.
“Every step on the Camino is an act of love, where caring for oneself and others propels us toward the goal.”
11. Forgiveness:
Only by forgiving ourselves and others can we open paths toward true brotherhood. Like life itself, the Camino de Santiago invites us to transform the painful stories of our past and present.
Forgiveness frees us from the weight of resentment toward ourselves and others. It’s a process of inner healing, allowing us to release the emotional and spiritual burdens we accumulate along life’s path.
On the Camino, forgiveness is revealed through reconciliation with the past, acceptance of our imperfections, and an openness to others with compassion and understanding.
It is a liberating act—one that lets us move forward with lighter hearts and peaceful minds.
“To forgive doesn’t mean to forget—it means seeing the wound from a more expansive perspective, where we all can grow.”
12. Joy:
Joy is the art of experiencing life in its simplest, most authentic form—finding happiness in each small moment along the way. It’s a feeling of lightness that arises when we’re in tune with our surroundings, when we share laughter with fellow pilgrims, or when we take in the beauty of nature and the freedom of the road.
Joy comes from gratitude for each step, from celebrating what we have achieved, and from the ability to see the positive even in challenges.
It brightens the journey, transforming effort into delight and leaving behind memories filled with light and positive energy.
We believe happiness is not just at the destination—it’s in every step we take. And when we walk through life with joy, that spirit becomes contagious, changing the lives of those around us.
“Joy is the philosopher’s stone that turns everything it touches into gold.”
13 Peace:
We believe in building a more humane world—and that this begins with inner peace. As the great pilgrim Saint Francis of Assisi said, we must be instruments of peace, carrying a message of unity wherever we go.
Peace brings us to a state of serenity and balance, something pilgrims often discover as they walk. It’s the calm that arrives when we leave behind the noise and stress of daily life, reconnecting deeply with ourselves, with nature, and with the spiritual dimension of our journey.
Peace on the Camino is felt in the silence of open landscapes, the birdsong, the scent of wild herbs, the simplicity of walking, and the quiet of reflection.
It’s a value that invites us to let go, to embrace the present moment, and to welcome stillness into both heart and mind.
“The path to peace begins with a smile.”
We strongly believe that by promoting the 13 Values of the Camino, we are contributing to the creation of a more balanced and compassionate world.
